Information about Liposuction

One of the most sought after types of aesthetic surgery is liposuction. This method used for the improvement of body contours has been increasingly popular since the end of the 70's. It is a lesser-known fact that the method was developed in Italy by a Hungarian surgeon, Árpád Fischer.

During adulthood the number of fat cells in our body does not change, while their size can increase or decrease. Stubborn fat deposits that disfigure the contours of the body can be eliminated in a relative simple way. The surgeon makes small (half to one centimeter) incisions in natural creases of the body and - after the insertion of a special tube (known as cannula) under the skin - vacuums out fatty tissues from the targeted areas that have been previously infused with a solution containing styptic (haemostatic) and local anaestetic.

Liposuction of smaller areas can be executed under local anaesthesia, in the form of one-day surgery but if several larger areas of the body are involved, general anaethesia is required. It is mostly performed as an independent surgery, for the liposuction of stomach, buttock, hip, thigh, knee and calf/ankle, less frequently for the elimination of fat from the neck (jowls) and face Sometimes it is carried out in conjunction with other types of aesthetic surgery, e.g. excess fat from the hips is removed with a closed technique when making an abdominoplasty.

Postoperative complications include bleeding, retention of fluid, changes in skin sensation, rippling and mottling of skin surface but also venous thrombosis and fat embolism may occur, particularly if a large volume of fat is being removed. On rare occasions, retention of blood and serous fluid can be seen on the affected areas that may require special drainage.

For several weeks after surgery, a special snug elastic garment should be worn. This helps the skin of affected areas to adhere back to its base and smaller haematomas, oedema to resolve quicker, optimizing the results of the surgery.

Who is a good candidate for liposuction?

A young or middle-aged, healthy, normal-weight (or almost normal-weight) female or male having subborn pockets of excess fat in certain areas that do not respond to traditional weight-loss methods. Good skin elasticity is essential! Loose (sagging) skin or the presence of strias excludes liposuction, since the skin is not able to contract porperly after surgery in these cases.

This procedure is designed to sculpt the body rather than to reduce body weight. It is not recommended to perform liposuction to reduce significantly the body weight of obese patients, since it can lead to life-threatening complications. The removed fat cells will not be substituted by the body, but inappropriate diet may easily cause residual fat cells to enlarge and fat deposits to return in the operated areas. Eating a healthy diet, getting regular exercise and living a healthy life can largely help to maintain the new shape of the body in the long run. Should these conditions be fulfilled, spectacular aesthetic results can be expected.
